witt. first off for you this hour the big fight in washington over spending and the debt limit. as that august 2nd deadline to raise the debt ceiling grows closer. we go to the white house for more. >> reporter: good morning, richard. it's a day closer to what the president and many outside experts are calling a financial catastrophe and hope for a big deal, the so-called grand bargain appears to be all but lost. the action turns to congress and whether they can pass a scaled down version of debt reduction before the country runs out of cash. taking his case public for the second time in a week, president obama accused republicans of refusing to compromise. >> the problem is members of congress are dug in ideologically into various positions because they boxed themselves in with previous statements. >> reporter: with the clock ticking towards what the president described as are a ma fw -- armageddon, he's hoping a deal could still be struck. >> but we got to get started now. that's why i'm expecting some answers from all the congressional leaders sometime in the next calm of da

. it unfortunately happened in this situation, in this place, we're never hoping for a big, destructive system, but when there's the possibility of it bringing some heavy rainfall to places that desperately need it, you want it to happen. in this case, it did not. however, there is the possibility that we may see some development of a different system out in the atlantic. we're going to watch it. it's still days away from affecting anyone at all, and it may not happen at all, but we're still going to watch it for you very carefully. another thing we're watching that is dangerous potentially is the heat. the heat is still relentless across parts of the central plains and back in the midwest. also the northern half of the map, western great lakes, upper midwest, there is going to be a chance that we have some severe storms developing later in the day. severe thunderstorms, deadly lightning a possibility, large hail, maybe even some tornadoes late in the afternoon hours, perhaps even into the early evening. but heat is going to be the major thing that's going to be dangerous for people today. dal

. they do, however, believe she's no longer in central florida. when she left the jail, you saw the big crowds there. there were people yelling "killer" in that crowd as she got into the suv and left. there is a great deal of emotion still unresolved around this case. we saw a lot of people getting together who were doing something peaceful with those emotions over the weekend. they went to the site where caylee anthony's body was discovered and held a march from that site to the anthony home. all to remember the child whose death started all of this. it was a very solemn occasion. a lot of people walking in the street. at one point it was reported there were cars lined up on the road about a half mile long of people just parking on the roadside going into those woods where her body was discovered to go to that spot and remember that little girl. again, a great deal of emotion. people trying to process all of this on their own. but casey anthony at the moment is still staying out of the public eye even though she has a lot of legal entanglements she will still have to address in the mon

us the big picture. >> reporter: what's happening now is democrats are waiting. they're just waiting to see what happens with the republican's bill before making their own move in the senate. the big picture here is neither the republican's bill in the house nor the democrats' bill in the senate seems to have the votes to get through both houses of congress. so we're back at stalemate. >> and so it's wednesday and there's no deal. the ted line is tuesday of next week. if congress can't get it done by then, you could start to see higher interest rates, a declining dollar and other problems. the white house website has put up a chart that breaks down the u.s. debt by administration over the last ten years. i was just looking at it. more than $3.5 trillion because of changes to the economy, not policy changes, but less tax income and things like that. the two wars, tax cuts, t.a.r.p., the so-called bank bailout, the stimulus is all listed there. worth checking out if you have some time. don't worry, it's safe for work. we do love our charts. >>> a federal granld jury in alabama indicted
